Service Opportunity Details: Computer or Remedial Math Skills Tutors: Computer tutors provide one-on-one support for users of our drop-in computer lab, or assist with one-on-one support during occasional classes in the computer lab. Intermediate computer skills required. Remedial Math tutors provide one-on-one support for students with scheduled appointments, using Khan Academy or other online sources for curriculum adapted to the students needs. Basic understanding of mathematics and intermediate computer skills required. High School Teachers: Teach a course for adult students in classes of up to 25. Course subjects include Math, English Composition, Financial Literacy, Computer Literacy, Communications, Social Studies, and Afro-American Studies. Teaching experience and college-level education of the subject required. Mentors: Establish a one-on-one relationship with a resident of St. Leonard’s Ministries for the purpose of providing friendship as the resident transitions back into society, the enjoyment of mutual activities (such as taking a walk, going to a museum, coffee at a café), and helping the resident to expand their visions for themselves and learn how networking can help them achieve these visions.

Location: Chicago-Near West Side

Volunteer Ages: Adults

Frequency: On-going

Frequency Details: Computer or Math Tutor: Commit at least one weekday morning or afternoon weekly or every two weeks. High School Teacher: Commit to at least one full semester (Fall or Spring). This would entail about 2 hours spent teaching between 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on one or two weekday evenings (M-TR) per week for 14 weeks. There is also a mandatory orientation prior to the start of the semester, and preparation time and grading time for each class. Mentor: Commit to at least once a month face-to-face contact with a resident of St. Leonard’s house or St. Andrew’s Court (men), or Grace House (women), for a period of six months. There is a mandatory orientation.
