September 2018 Youth Update

Written by: Julia Smolucha

September is Homecoming month in more ways than one. Here is a glimpse of what is going on with KUC Youth Ministries…

  • College Students
    • Farewell: We said farewell to our IMPACT College Leaders in late August over breakfast at Walker Brothers in Wilmette in late August.
    • Care Packages: We are now preparing for our annual College Care Package Project (see IMPACT below). If you know a college freshman who should receive a care package, please email the address to Silvi Pirn.
    • Christmas Break: We pray that our college students fare well this semester and for their safe return for the following:
      • College Reunion Lunch: December 21 at 1 p.m. at Napolita in Wilmette Christmas Eve at 11 p.m. Traditional Candlelight Worship: Where College students and young adults are called to serve as greeters, ushers, and officiants.
      • Winter Break IMPACT College Mission Trip: Tentative dates are January 2–9, 2019. We are currently planning for the trip and will publish information soon.
  • Youth Group Special Events
    • Pre-Season Paddle Party: On August 29, a group of adventurous youth and leaders hit the water on a paddle around Skokie Lagoons. It was a great way to get us ready for a year of youth group fun ahead!
    • Youth Groups at Corn Maze on October 17: Our next special event for KUC Youth Ministries. Details and trip registration here.
  • Youth Music Retreat Reflection: September 6–9 was annual Music Ministry Retreat to Green Lake Wisconsin. We had an incredible weekend of intergenerational singing, relationship-building, and God moments. Quite a few photos are posted online on the KUC Youth instagram account @kucyouth.
  • Breakfast Club Kick Off: On Homecoming Sunday, September 16 the smell of bacon was in the air as we welcomed over 20 youth to our Breakfast Club in the Warwick Manse. On the following Sunday, September 23, the youth were introduced to a new spiritual practice, the Labyrinth. The Breakfast Club is every Sunday, except during school vacation times from 10:15–11:30 a.m. in the Warwick Manse for grades 7 and older.
  • Confirmation Classes: The Centennial Class officially started with commissioning during the 10:30 a.m. Worship on Homecoming Sunday, September 16. We followed up with a mini-retreat to the Loyola University Retreat and Ecology Center on Sunday, September 23, where confirmation students faced group and individual outdoor challenges and obtained tools such as trust, perseverance, community, integrity, respect, and encouragement for their confirmation course ahead.
  • IMPACT: Please follow us on instagram @kucimpact.
    • Junior Board: The Roster of 2018–19 Junior Board members was published earlier in September. There were over 20 applications for seven vacancies. We had our first meeting on September 16.
    • IMPACT Kick Off: Over 70 high school youth showed up on Sunday, September 16 to find out what IMPACT is about and how to get involved in the coming months and what it takes to join the mission trip program. Missed the meeting?  It’s OK, you can find information online or contact Silvi Pirn.

        • Remember three hours of KUC Youth volunteer service needs to be logged before applying for the mission trip program. Volunteer opportunities are listed on the Youth Volunteer Calendar.
  • Youth Groups: Wednesday Youth Groups kicked on September 19. Youth are invited to join the fun every Wednesday except during school vacation weeks. Both groups meet at the Warwick Manse—417 Warwick Rd—except if there is a special event. See Corn Maze above for October 17.
    • Middle School Youth Group (MSYG): MSYG were greeted with dinosaurs (youth leaders in t-rex costumes) and then picked up pool noodles and balls for front-yard recreation. After learning a bit about what youth group is about, they returned to the front yard and got soaking wet with the help of hundreds of water balloons. 5th and 6th graders are invited to join the fun every Wednesday from 5 to 6 p.m. except during school vacation weeks.
    • Junior High Youth Group (JYG): JYG also saw a few dinosaurs sliding on the giant slip-n-slide they set up in the front yard of the manse. They came in for dinner, devouring eight pizzas, and to hear what youth group is about. Then the group headed outside to play games on a giant slip n slide. 7th and 8th graders are invited to join the fun every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. except during school vacation weeks.
