July–August 2018 Youth Update

Written by: Julia Smolucha

July is the peak of Summer. Long hot days with lots of outdoor time. Camps and travel are in full swing. August then, must be a “quiet month”—time to rest and rejuvenate for the year ahead. Anyone with teens knows it can be anything but quiet. Families are squeezing in last-minute camp- and family-time before school starts—and there are sports tryouts and school-supply shopping—and then there are those who are headed to college. Technically July and August are “planning months” for youth ministry and frankly, we could use more time! Here is a glimpse of what is going on with KUC Youth Ministry:

  • Confirmation
    • Confirmation Wilderness Course: We finished our transformational week in the Boundary Waters Wilderness in Minnesota on August 4 and will share reflections during worship on Sunday, August 26 at 10 a.m. in the Sanctuary.
    • Confirmation Classes for Centennial Classroom Students begin with commissioning on Sunday, September 16 at 10 a.m. in the Sanctuary. Don’t forget to register at kuc.org!
  • Youth Music Retreat although, technically, this is Lisa Bond’s department, Silvi is joining the Fall Choir Retreat to Wisconsin for the second year in a row and this is going to be a good time! Retreat dates are Sept 7–9 and registration is due ASAP. Vernon Clark is helping lead the singing, so if you like to sing, get on this! Parents are invited, too.
  • IMPACT Cuba still echoes in our hearts and minds. Teams have met for mini-reunions and leaders have crafted and carried out a few clever pranks. Our final farewell to the college leaders and departing Seniors will be this week.
    • Thursday, August 16 at 9 a.m. at Panera in Wilmette
    • Friday, August 17 at 11 a.m. at Walker Bros. in Wilmette
  • IMPACT 20182019 for those who need to know:
    • IMPACT Kickoff Meeting for 201819 will be on Sunday, September 16 at 7 p.m. All High School Students are invited to come and find out what IMPACT is about and how to get involved in next year’s mission trip which, yes, is being planned already!
    • Rising Juniors and Seniors have asked already about joining the IMPACT Junior Board for 2018– See Youth Leadership next.
  • 201819 Youth Leadership programs are accepting applications online.
    • CORE Leadership team: For high school students who want to help lead Wednesday Youth Groups.
    • IMPACT Jr. Board. For High school Juniors and Seniors who want to help lead the IMPACT program.
  • Youth Ministries Staff Changes: After blessing us for two years with great food, goofy games, and lots of smiles, we said farewell to Ben Graham in July. We welcome Claire Revord as our new Associate Director of Youth Ministry and Shelby Kosanovich as a new Youth Leader. You will get to see them here in person soon!
  • Youth Group Preseason Paddle Party Wednesday, August 29. All youth entering Grade 5 and above are invited. Registration is online here.
  • Wednesday Youth Groups for grades 5–8 kick off Wednesday, September 19 and we are planning an amazing giant slip n slide with surprise guests for Junior High. More information will be coming soon.
  • College Care Package Project: College-bound Freshmen! We want your address for the fall care-package project! When you have a minute, dm, text or email your address to Silvi Pirn.
  • In the meantime, follow @kucyouth on Instagram.
