Raising a Healthy Teen in an Opioid World
October 11 at 7 p.m. in the Culbertson Room
High school has started again and kids are back in sports. For many athletes, pain is just part of the game (“No Pain No Gain”). But, treating injuries or recovering from surgery with pain killers, such as opioids, can be very dangerous and can impact a child for life. Opioids are highly addictive and can lead to injury, lifelong disability or death, if misused or abused. According to a 2017 report by the Illinois Department of Public Health, opioid related deaths in Illinois doubled the number of car fatalities in 2016.
The Alison Tobey Smart (ATS) Board presents informative discussions about raising a healthy athlete in a world that treats pain with pain killers, such as opioids. Our robust panel will discuss the opioid epidemic, how it is impacting families of the North Shore, and the role of opioids in sports medicine.
