Confirmation 2008-09

Sundays 10:30-11:30 am

Tuesdays 7:00-8:00 pm

At Kenilworth Union Church, we invite all freshmen to participate in the KUC Confirmation Program: Seeds of Faith. Confirmation is a journey of Christian formation and transformation, learned and lived for 7 months and culminating in membership at KUC. Ninth graders will be guided through the Christian story and an understanding of our church, its history and what it means to be a part of this community.

In order to complete the class and be confirmed, students are asked to fulfill the following:

Class Attendance-Confirmation students are expected to regularly attend confirmation class. This year we will offer the class at two different times each week. One class will be on Sunday mornings at 10:30 am and the other class will be on Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm. Students are asked to select a class time to register for. If a student misses class, they can make it up by coming to the other class or by completing a worksheet covering the material from the missed class.

Worship Attendance -Each confirmand is expected to attend four worship services at KUC before Confirmation Sunday. A Worship Question sheet should be completed for each service attended. We will also be taking field trips to other houses of worship, such as a Jewish synagogue, a gospel church and the Baha'I temple, to broaden our understanging of what worship is.

Confirmation Retreat -Confirmands are asked to participate in the Confirmation Retreat December 6th-7th. We will be going to Covenant Harbor in Lake Geneva, WI for a week-end of adventure challenges and faith formation. The retreat will be led by the high school seniors. In March, we will also have a Friday evening retreat with Terry Nelson Johnson exploring the Paschal Mystery. If a student is unable to come to these retreats, there will also be a mini-mission trip into the city for all senior high students that confirmands are welcome to participate in.

Service-Confirmands have the opportunity to participate in service projects that connect them to the church and those outside of the church in need. As a class we will select a particular agency to partner with so that we can go there and do work projects as well as engage in fundraisers at church to support our outreach.

Faith Statement - Writing a faith statement is an important part of confirmation. Each student is expected to write a faith statement. The first draft will be due by Thanksgiving and the second draft will be due by the end of January.

Mentor Meetings - Each confirmation student is asked to select a member of KUC to be their mentor. A mentor is an adult member of the congregation who is willing to meet with you one-on-one three times during the course of the class. In these meetings you will talk about what is means to become a member, your faith journeys and your mentor can help you to write your faith statement. If you know someone you would like to be your mentor, please ask them if they are willing and fill in their name on the registration sheet. If you need a suggestion, let me know and I will pair you with someone.

Confirmation Sunday will be March 15, 2009 and the youth will be confirmed at the 10:30 am service. Directly following that, the youth will lead a worship service for family and friends. This is a very special day, so please save the date.
