Prayers of the People—August 6
By Elza Garnett
Please pray with me:
Gracious God, we praise you for our many blessings. In this season of summer, we are grateful for the beautiful sunrises and sunsets, the warm sun and the long summer days that give us an opportunity to spend time with family and friends. We thank you for each day that we wake up renewed, healthy and ready to serve you and each other.
Yet, in the midst of our thanks, O Lord, we acknowledge our world is troubled… torn by war and suffering. Give the leaders of all nations the courage and compassion to champion peace, equality, freedom, and justice. Help those who have been marginalized by economic inequality to have hope and opportunity so that they can end the destructive cycle of poverty. There are no easy or quick fixes to any of our problems, Lord. Give us the perseverance and faith to be a part of your plan. Inspire us to live our lives giving generously of ourselves.
Help us to have the spirit of Christ in all that we do and the way we interact with others. May we comfort those who are suffering and may we rejoice with those in gladness. May we show God’s love to all.
In the words of Saint Francis of Assisi we pray:
Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life,
Hear us now as we pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying, Our Father…
