Confirmation Wilderness Trip: A Sending Prayer
With Silvi Pirn and myself, our high school freshmen are about to enter the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, experiencing the depth and beauty of God’s creation. In the wilderness, we will confirm their faith in God, and explore what it means to be a Christian.
We go into the wilderness for Confirmation because God writes the Gospel, not in the Bible alone, but on the trees and flowers and clouds and stars. The writer of Psalm 8 must have experienced something similar, for the Psalmist writes, “When I look at the heavens, the works of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established… O Lord, our God, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
Pray for God to be wrapped around us in our departing and in returning.
Pray that together, we might receive the blessings of the wilderness – silence and solitude, a sense of awe and gratitude.
Pray that we might receive the blessings of community – the laughter, friendship, and sense of home that comes from shared experience.
Pray that we might recognize the power of traveling under our own power with the aid of ancient and elegantly simple tools – the canoe, the paddle, a pair of boots – remembering that someone was traveling this way thousands of years ago, and someone may be doing the same a thousand years from now.
Pray that, as we enter the wilderness, living with the essentials and little more, that we might learn that all we really need is to be safe, fed, clothed, sheltered, and challenged.
