Please join us for a special outing to the Chicago Botanic Garden on Saturday, June 3! Starting from the Kenilworth train station at 9:30 am, we will ride our bikes along the Green Bay Trail to the Chicago Botanic Garden where we will view the fascinating Model Railroad Garden exhibit, “Landmarks of America,” followed by lunch at Meg’s Café in Glencoe.
This exhibit will appeal to all ages so please invite friends and family!
As described on the Chicago Botanic Garden website, the 7,500 square-foot Model Railroad Garden includes “18 model, garden-scale, trains running on 18 tracks. The trains traverse high and low though tunnels, across 26 bridges, and around 50 miniature American landmarks. All are intricately handcrafted with natural materials, including twigs, bar, leaves, acorns, and pebbles. More than 5,000 tiny trees, shrubs, groundcovers, and flowering plants of close to 300 varieties re-create the topographical landscape of America. Vignettes of tiny people and animals give the exhibit a storybook feel, while sound effects and a working geyser capture visitors’ imaginations.”
If you are unable to bike to the Garden, you may meet us at the exhibit at 10:30 am. Summer Family Fun packages for $55 are also available exclusively online for non-members that include parking and admission for up to five people to the Model Railroad Garden and the Butterflies & Blooms exhibits, which will be running concurrently.
If you would like to rent a bike, you can rent one through Bike & Roll with bike locations at the Skokie Lagoons at Tower Road in Winnetka, Harms Woods in Wilmette, and the Botanic Garden. The cost is $7/hour with a maximum of $28 for the day. The concept is similar to that of a Divvy bike. If there is sufficient interest, a second group could depart from the Skokie Lagoons or Harms Woods and bike through the Forest Preserve to the Garden. Indicate your interest on the RSVP sheet.
